Creating Healthy University Standards for Workforce, Policy and Infrastructure to Support Health and Wellbeing - Royal Society of Public Health.
Creating a Healthy University Framework to Support Health and Wellbeing (HUF) is a Department of Health (DH) project implemented by the Royal Society of Public Health Royal Society for Public Health in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire.
Its objectives are:
• to articulate a model for Healthy Universities whereby the healthy settings approach is applied within the higher education sector
• to produce recommendations for the development and operationalisation of a National Healthy Universities Framework
• to ensure effective co-ordination of initiatives and propose next steps for progressing the Healthy Universities agenda.
Having a long history of successfully engaging with employers, education providers and frontline health workforces, the RSPH is uniquely placed to access existing stakeholder networks, including non-governmental organisations, colleges, universities and commercial partners. It has formal links with a number of ‘partner' Universities who share a common agenda to support and develop teaching and learning in public health.
UCLan's Healthy University initiative was set up in 1995 and is the longest running initiative of its kind. The Healthy University approach reflects a broad understanding of health and wellbeing and applies a whole system perspective - aiming to create healthy and sustainable working, learning and living environments for students, staff and visitors; increase the profile of health in teaching, research and knowledge exchange; and contribute to the health and sustainability of the wider community.
Since 2006, UCLan has convened an informal English National Network - established in response to growing demand within the higher education sector. Working in partnership with MMU and other universities, it has recently been successful in securing funding from HEFCE for the project 'Developing Leadership and Governance for Healthy Universities', which will strengthen and expand the Network and develop guidance materials and case studies, UCLan and MMU will work in partnership with RSPH on this DH funded project, adding value and ensuring effective co-ordination. The HUF project will ensure that all RSPH partner universities are provided the opportunity to join and engage with the English National Healthy Universities Network.
