Routes to the Register

There are currently three routes to membership of the UKPHR:

  • The Standard route requires completion of an accredited training programme.
  • Retrospective recognition route requires a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your eligibility.
  • The Dual route requires membership to the General Medical Council or the General Dental Council's Specialist Registers in public health.

For more information about the different routes to the register visit the UKPHR website.

Specialist Training Programme

The higher specialist training programme in public health (standard route) is open to both qualified medical doctors and those from other public health disciplines or related backgrounds.

Training usually lasts five years full-time, part-time training is proportionately longer. The five years usually includes one year (full or part time) on an academic course, and 48 months in higher specialist training posts.

The specialist training programme leads to the generalist arm of the register. At present there are no training programmes that lead to the defined specialist arm of the register.

For more details about what the training programme entails visit the Faculty of Public Health website.

Retrospective Recognition

Retrospective recognition of competencies is available for senior practitioners either as generalists or defined specialists. This route is commonly referred to as the ‘portfolio route'.

The generalist portfolio route is now closed however ‘Recognition of Specialist Status' is available to generalists applying retrospectively under exceptional circumstances. Please refer to the UK Public Health Register website for further information.

The defined specialist portfolio route currently open and is supported in Yorkshire and Humber by a Regional Defined Specialist Portfolio Development Support Programme. For more information about the programme contact Pam Ashton, Programme Coordinator. Applications to the programme should be made to the Training Programme Director, Val Barker. Applications should be supported by the applicant's line manager and / or their Director of Public Health.
