Win Leeds
The latest available data (2006) estimates the population of Leeds to be 750,200, an increase of 4.9% since 2001.
The overall health of Leeds's population has improved and in comparison to the other ‘core cities' in England (Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Newcastle, Bristol and Nottingham) Leeds compares favourably and has the lowest all age, all cause mortality rate for both males and females (Healthy Leeds 2007)
However, this is a different matter when compared to the national average for England. Leeds has significantly worse values for 24 key Public Health indicators including all age cause mortality, male life expectancy, smoking prevalence in long term condition patients, alcohol related admission rates, prevalence and mortality from circulatory and respiratory diseases, incidence and mortality from cancer and emergency admissions for chronic illnesses such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma.
When this information is analysed in depth it presents Leeds as a city of significant inequalities in health. It hosts both men and women living in the most deprived wards of the city having worse health and shorter lives than people in the less deprived wards.
As one of its key aspirations, NHS Leeds will work as part of a strong and focused partnership with the local authority, third sector, and local businesses of Leeds to focus on improving Public Health and wellbeing and achieving recognisable reductions in health inequalities.
However, it is widely acknowledged that individuals working within the statutory, community and voluntary sectors require further information to fully understand the role in which they play in helping to reduce the health inequalities. In recognition, The Public Health Directorate within NHS Leeds feels it has a responsibility in helping to transform, train and develop the skills of these workers within Leeds who are helping to contribute to reducing the health inequalities and currently provides WIN - Public Health Development Programme.
